INFORMACION GENERAL

commenting that the road was good, with pastures and places for bonfires at the points where the night was spent. He locates the Inka Bridge to an arcabuz shot of the road, pre- ceding that he did not use it since there was no water in the river. His comment suggests that the bridge was not part of the Inka trail, which probably did not cross the river at the point where the so-called Inka bridge is located. The Jesuit Miguel de Olivares traveled the Inkaen road in the 18th century, writing about the Inka installations he observed (1864 [1762]: 18): “These houses are commonly arranged at a distance from an army march from one another, although this regularity it is not always observed because sometimes some are one league away [4 or 5 kilometers] and sometimes a little less than the others “. The English traveler John Miers (1826: 294, 279) makes a specific reference on the site of Tambillitos in a description of his journey through the Andes in 1819. He writes that to the west of Tambillitos “at various intervals in the Cordillera we we find similar places, which the arrieros tell us are the Casas de los Indios, the resting places of the ancient Peruvians during their marches to Chile “(1826: 294). Miers writes that General San Martin often assured him that the buildings belonged to the ancient Indians. In addition, “it is said that this road was very traveled by the Peruvians, who transported corn, using llamas and alpacas, for the maintenance of the mining districts of Aconcagua” (1826: 294) .The written accounts of the aforementioned travelers, not only They suggest that there was more than one Inka site on the road to the Mendoza River, but they also report some information about the function of the road, Olaverría indicates that it was a military route, Miers, whose observation of the early 19th century is not well documented, write that it was used to transport corn to the mining districts .
