Full Itinerary: Tour to Palcoyo Mountain from Cusco
Pallcoyo Andes Range
Looking for a less crowded alternative to Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain? Palcoyo Mountain is your ideal option. Situated at nearly 5,000 meters (16,400 feet) above sea level, it offers surreal landscapes, multicolored mountains, and much easier access. Here’s the full itinerary to enjoy this unforgettable experience starting from Cusco.
Early Departure from Cusco – Pallcoyo Andes Range
Pick-up time: Between 4:20 AM and 4:50 AM
Altitude of Cusco: 3,350 meters (10,990 feet)
We begin the day early to make the most of the experience. Our team will pick you up from your accommodation in Cusco in a modern tourist vehicle equipped for the journey. The initial drive heads south from Cusco, where the connection to the Andes begins to reveal itself.
Breakfast in Cusipata – Andean Energy
Travel time to Cusipata: 1 hour and 40 minutes
Altitude: 3,310 meters (10,859 feet)
Our first stop is in the traditional town of Cusipata, where we’ll enjoy a buffet breakfast made with local ingredients: artisanal bread, hot quinoa, Andean fruits, eggs, and more. This is a great moment to acclimate and prepare for the gradual ascent. Clean restrooms and changing areas are also available if needed.
Checacupe – History, Culture, and Ancient Bridges
Altitude: 3,446 meters (11,306 feet)
We continue on to Checacupe, a hidden cultural gem. Here, you’ll find three bridges representing three different eras in Peru’s history: the Inca bridge (made of ichu grass and woven ropes), the colonial stone bridge, and a modern iron bridge. It’s a perfect place to understand Peru’s historical evolution through its pathways.
Arrival at Palcoyo – Nature and Andean Life
Travel time from Checacupe to Palcoyo: 1 hour and 30 minutes
As we approach the Palccoyo community, the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic. You’ll see South American camelids like llamas and alpacas in their natural habitat, as well as small rural villages where locals live from herding and agriculture. It’s a true immersion into Andean rural life.
Hike to Palcoyo Mountain
Starting altitude: 4,800 meters (15,748 feet)
Highest point: 4,900 meters (16,076 feet)
Hiking time: Approximately 40 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes (round trip)
Difficulty: Moderate, ideal for those seeking a less strenuous trek
Unlike the 7-Color Mountain (Vinicunca), the trek to Palcoyo is more accessible and less physically demanding. During the walk, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of three rainbow-colored mountains, unique geological formations, and the famous stone forest—a natural phenomenon that looks otherworldly.
Three Rainbow Mountains Viewpoint & Stone Forest
At the summit, you’ll reach one of the best natural viewpoints in the Andes. If the weather is clear, you may even catch a glimpse of the majestic Ausangate, the highest mountain in Cusco. The Stone Forest is another highlight—rock formations rising like spires into the Andean sky.
Buffet Lunch in Cusipata
After the descent, we return to Cusipata where a buffet lunch awaits, featuring traditional dishes such as ají de gallina, lomo saltado, Andean soup, quinoa, fresh vegetables, and homemade desserts. It’s the perfect time to share stories with fellow travelers and recharge.
Return to Cusco – From the Pallcoyo Andes Range
We conclude this adventure by returning to Cusco, arriving approximately between 5:00 PM and 5:30 PM. A full day filled with culture, nature, and adventure—undoubtedly one of the most memorable moments of your journey through Peru.
