The 4-day Salkantay Inca Trail offers a unique experience combining adventure, history, nature, and spectacular landscapes. This alternative route to the traditional Inca Trail takes travelers through snow-capped peaks, lush jungles, and turquoise lakes, culminating in the majestic Machu Picchu citadel. With accommodations in luxury domes or local hotels, each day promises both comfort and excitement.

Day 1: Cusco – Mollepata – Soraypampa – Humantay Lagoon

The trek begins very early, between 4:30 and 5:00 a.m., with pickup in Cusco. After approximately a 2-hour drive, we stop in Mollepata for a hearty breakfast before continuing to Challacancha (3,800 m / 12,457 ft), the starting point of our hike.

The day starts with a 3-hour hike to the Soraypampa base camp (3,900 m / 12,800 ft), where a nutritious lunch will be served.

Next, we ascend for 1.5 hours to the spectacular Humantay Lagoon (4,220 m / 13,850 ft). Here, travelers can admire green valleys, the imposing peaks of Humantay and Salkantay, and natural beauty that changes with the seasons. The local guide shares historical and cultural insights, making the hike both educational and enriching.

After exploring the lagoon, we descend back to Soraypampa, where we enjoy a hot cup of coca tea and a dinner prepared by our chefs. Guests rest in luxury domes, enjoying a night under the stars.

Hiking distance: 12 km / 7.4 miles

Day 2: Soraypampa – Salkantay Pass – Lucmabamba

The second day begins early with a hearty 5:00 a.m. breakfast, preparing hikers for the most challenging stretch of the trek: the ascent to Salkantay Pass (4,650 m / 15,250 ft). From this point, the views of snow-capped peaks Salkantay, Humantay, Tucarhuay, and Pumasillo are simply breathtaking.

We continue hiking through Salkantaypampa and Soyrococha, passing a hidden lake before descending to Huarachmachay (3,800 m / 12,470 ft), where lunch is served. The descent continues for 3 hours and 30 minutes to the village of Chaullay, where a vehicle takes us to Lucmabamba (1-hour drive).

The night is spent in luxury domes, enjoying a chef-prepared dinner and resting for the next day’s adventure.

Day 3: Lucmabamba – Llactapata – Hydroelectric – Aguas Calientes

On the third day, we enter the Peruvian jungle, waking early for breakfast while enjoying the sunrise over rivers, waterfalls, and plantations of coffee, banana, and avocado. The hike follows sections of the original Inca Trail, with spectacular views of the Santa Teresa Valley.

After approximately 3 hours of hiking, we reach the archaeological site of Llactapata, where the guide shares Inca history and cultural details, and we get our first glimpse of Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu.

After lunch, we continue to the Hydroelectric station, from where we can walk 3 hours to Aguas Calientes or take an optional train for $38. Upon arrival, enjoy dinner at a local restaurant and spend the night at a hotel in this picturesque town at the foot of Machu Picchu.

Hiking distance: 18 km / 11 miles
